Three cards with similar value are called three of a kind or a royal pair. Cribbage is played in rounds and each round consists of four stages. Cribbage, or crib, is a card game traditionally for two players, but commonly played with three, four or more, that involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points. Cribbage has several distinctive features: the cribbage board used for score-keeping, the eponymous crib, box. Nearly every cribbage player knows that 29 is the highest-scoring hand that one can achieve, and that 19 and some others are impossible to score. However, I'm curious to know what is the highest s. Cribbage rules may sound a bit complex and obscure, but once learned the game can be quite fun and challenging to play.

CribbageIn this instance the 6 of Diamonds is the starter card. What you should do first is count all the combinations that make 15, then the run, then Nobs. So here you have 15-2(5 and Jack), 15-4(4+5+6), and a run of 4 is 8(3,4,5,6) and Nobs is 9.

A good way to practice counting cribbage hands is to play cribbage solitaire. You just need a deck of cards and a cribbage board. To start I deal 2 cards up, one down, two up, one down and two up. The down cards are one half of a crib, I discard 2 of the up cards face down to complete the crib. then I turn over the top card of the remaining pack as the starter card, 2 points for Nibs if it comes up. I then look at the hand, peg points as if I were playing them in sequence, i.e. 15's, runs, pairs, etc., then I count the hand with the starter card and peg the points. Then I count the crib and peg the points. All eight cards used in the hand and crib are put in a 'discard' pile. I then deal the starter card to the hand with an up card, 1 down, 2 up , 1 down, and 2 up and continue the way I started. Once through the deck should leave you with three cards left over in the pack. If you can complete 121 holes pegged before the deck runs out you win, but in all honesty the improvement to your counting skills will make you a winner no matter how many times you loose at solitaire.

If you can remember to follow the sequence I outlined above you should be able to pick up most of the points in a typical hand. You will however occasionally find a hand with points that are harder to notice, or so numerous you lose track of the total. The rest of this page is a collection of hands that might cause problems for the beginner or novice player.

Scoring

The starter

The player on the dealer's left cuts the undealt portion of the deck (leaving at least 4 cards), and the dealer reveals the top card, called the 'starter' or the 'cut', placing it on top of the deck face up. (It is illegal to peek at any other cards in the deck during this process.) If this card is a Jack, the dealer scores two points for 'his heels', also known as 'his nibs', or simply 'nibs'. The game can end on a cut of a Jack for the dealer.

The play (Pegging)

In addition to scoring one or two points for the last card, players score points according to the following rules:

  • fifteen-twos
    • two points for a cumulative total of exactly fifteen ('fifteen two')
  • runs
    • three points for completing a run of three cards, regardless of the order in which they are laid (a 6, then a 4, then a 5 is a run of three even though they were not laid in order)
    • four points for completing a run of four
    • five points for completing a run of five
    • six points for completing a run of six
    • seven points for completing the run of seven; e.g. playing 2, 4, 6, A, 3, 5 and 7
  • pairs
    • two points for laying a card of the same rank as the previous card, thus completing a pair
    • six points for laying a third card of the same rank (a 'pair royal' or 'trips')
    • twelve points for laying a fourth card of the same rank (a 'double pair royal' or 'quad')

The show

Once the play is complete, each player in turn receives points based on the content of their hand. Starting with the player on the dealer's left, players spread out their cards on the playing surface and calculate their score based on these four cards and the starter card:

  • fifteen-twos
    • two points for each separate combination of two or more cards totalling exactly fifteen
  • runs
    • three points for a run of three consecutive cards (regardless of suit)
    • four points for completing a run of four
    • five points for completing a run of five
  • pairs
    • two points for a pair of cards of a kind
    • six points for three cards of a kind (known as a 'pair royal', comprising three distinct pairs)
    • twelve points for four cards of a kind (a 'double pair royal', comprising six distinct pairs)
  • flush
    • four points for a flush, where all four cards in the hand are of the same suit, with an additional point if the starter card is also of that suit.
    • one point for holding the Jack of the same suit as the starter card ('one for his nob' or '... his nobs' )
    • unlike the dealer's own hand, the crib cannot score a four-card flush, but it can score a five-card flush with the starter.
